Genuinely one of the better approaches to language learning

I first used Pimsleur back in 2017 as I was moving to Germany for a few months and needed something to get me conversational within a short period of time (unlike Duolingo). Back then lessons were 1hr each but honestly it worked wonders as many of the friends I made were surprised that I had only been learning for a short time as I had really good pronunciation. I only really done level 1 and utilised my friends to build on it which helped tons. Fast forward to 2024 and I decided to re-subscribe to Pimsleur after 6 years of not using it, this time to learn Spanish, as I have close friends and colleagues who speak the language. Was pleasantly surprised that lessons were only 30 minutes each but the quality remained the same. Again, apart from being able to roll my R’s, my colleagues and friends loved my pronunciation and ability to have small basic conversation after only a few weeks. My advice to anyone looking to become conversational in a short period of time is to use additional free resources alongside Pimsleur. If streaming tv series or movies set the language to what you’re learning and put subtitles on. Use YouTube channels and podcasts. Find people you can actually speak to as it helps massively!

IGNORE THE ONE-STAR REVIEWS!

It is ESSENTIAL to know that Pimsleur.com is the REAL course, available for decades, and very highly respected. Unfortunately a copycat site - like Pimseurapproach - is know to be a ripoff. Sadly, it seems that most if not all of the one star reviews are actually for the copycat. Don't be misled. The original - by the famous Dr. Pimsleur - is one of the oldest, successful and effective learn-by-speaking course that exists.

Overall Met My Expectations

I haven't bought the product but I reviewed the paid version of the Ukrainian course, which Pimsleur kindly made available to all. It is a good resource. The only thing is that there are certain sounds I can't pronounce as they are not found in my native languages or the languages I know, so that was difficult as there is no bridging section for that. Nonetheless, the recordings were helpful. The speakers spoke clearly and slowly enough for me to catch on (except the sounds I couldn't pronounce). I would recommend Pimsleur for those who want to focus on speaking and listening, which are the oldest and most widely used parts of languages and communication.

better to buy the lessons, rather than subscribe

I like being able to practice out loud, and repeat lessons as many times as I need to. I first tried the monthly subscription, which didn't work for me, because I could only play the lessons at normal speed. For people over 50, we need more time to process information. instead, I bought the lessons as an audiobook, rather than subscribing to the monthly course, I was able to slow down the audio to 75% speed, which is much better for learning. The monthly course is expensive, so the company should add a feature to the app for longer pauses. but ... now that I have purchased the lessons, I can learn at a better pace for me, and I really like the program. (the 'date of experience' is ongoing. I've been using the program for over a month.

The Only Language Program I Use

I just returned from a week's vacation in Budapest. Having followed the Pimsleur Hungarian program for only 13 lessons, I was able to greet people, order food and drinks, ask simple directions, make purchases, and do some small talk. Most amazingly, my Hungarian friends told me my accent was excellent. Just think how I'd have done if I'd had time to complete the whole course! I've been using Pimsleur Language Programs for years, usually before I make an overseas trip. In addition to Hungarian, I've also learned conversational Italian, Irish Gaelic, Cantonese, Icelandic, and Dutch. I've tried other programs--forget about the useless grammar rules and isolated vocabulary. Nothing gets you up and running with useful conversation and a native accent like Pimsleur. Try it. Just trust the process. You may be able to do one lesson a day, or, like me (I'm not as young as I used to be) you may want to repeat it once or twice before moving on. It's easy, and it really enhances the travel experience.
