Two key points to remember. They can see your number. Although they will say it's their auto system , they are judgmental and not empathetic. On the first point they are totally underhanded because as others have said they implore people to call back. Another charity like the other suicide ones such as SPUK and Sane Line who seem more interested in ego promotions for the organisation then in actually doing the hard work they claim to be doing for society. That is the opposite of ticking boxes and expecting people to spew up their troubles in 3o mins and feel better after. Unfortunately the Cyber Age has made such disingenuous and often dangerous entities . As the Samaritans and SPUK stronger and more unchallenged than ever before all they have to do is keep putting up self congratulatory posts and censoring all complaints or concerns. Which has never been easier. I've already concluded and other's have illustrated. how they cut in and force the caller on to the volunteers way of thinking . I was a volunteer once and a caller called up who was depressed because they wanted to be a singer and didn't have the confidence. My colleague a fat and unkept blighter . Said the caller should sing. When the singer sung she made that person a butt of the office joke. Disgraceful. However that was ten years ago before they spent the majority of their time and their donations on social media and stone wall promotions

There is no doubt that the volunteers at Samaritans have saved me. I am so grateful for all they do. I spoke to someone called Alex last night and he provided everything that I needed. It was okay for me to just cry and take my time. It was the first time, possibly ever, that I have felt listened to and genuinely understood. More often than not, when I have spoken to mental health professionals, it’s clear that the advice they are giving is only being said because ‘it’s protocol’. However with Samaritans, especially Alex, I believed everything that was being said, no script, no guidelines, just honesty. I needed hope and a reason to get through the night and try again, and that’s exactly what I got. Thank you

Amazing!! I spoke to an amazing person called Bob, he honestly touched my heart and helped so much. Had such a good conversation that we were both so sad to go. These guys are lifesavers! Thank you so much <3

Always been there for me when I've been struggling or in crisis. Even got to see one for a face to face chat at their office in Sunderland, which was an invaluable help. Thank you, Samaritans and keep 'fighting the good fight!. To anyone out there who've despaired and hit rock bottom - keep on going, never give up, you are all worthwhile. I want to put an arm round all of you.

So helpful if you need someone to listen. I have used Samaritans twice in my life, today I spoke to a man whom I wish I had asked his name, he spoke to me for over half and hour and listened to everything I said, refered back to things I told him about and mainly I just felt listened to which I barley feel out in the world. I’ve reached out for help in many places but Samaritans is the best place I’ve got help from ever. The guy today helped me so so so much, just by taking to me and listening and the fact that I have no expectations from a stranger made it much less overwhelming than reaching out to other places. I genuinely appreciate this helpline so much because I know I’m never really alone, even when it feels like it. A stranger having such compassion towards my situation is extremely beneficial especially when you can’t even reach out to those closest to you. I know my problems aren’t fixed but I know I’m a lot stronger than I feel thanks to the man I spoke to today and I can’t thank him enough, If you don’t get through to someone helpful then call again. There is someone on the end of the line that cares.
