Ridiculously expensive

What One Medical is: an online system to manage your health records and schedule consultations with medical providers (mostly generalists), plus a network of offices. Good first line of defense for medical problems. No specialists. What your membership (e.g. through Amazon/Prime) gets you: access to this system. No services are included. The costs are RIDICULOUS: for a 15-minute call to authorize the refill for a prescription, One Medical, - billed me $549.00 - "adjusted" (whatever that means) $164.70 - left me to pay $384.30 If you have insurance that covers One Medical, it's a useful concierge medicine service for simple medical needs. If you don't have insurance, it's literally cheaper to fly to Mexico and get your prescription meds and fly back (though don't do that...) than to use One Medical AND pay for the medication.

Crappy Healthcare Model

Peakmed in CO was bought out by One Medical in January 2024. Since the buy out, appts keep getting rescheduled; availability of providers is lacking, overall communication with patients has gone downhill and the providers are clearly unhappy. It’s sad to see what was a great healthcare design model get utterly trashed in less than 6 months. Amazon has found a way to create a Temu (crappy cheap) version of healthcare and harm even more consumers.

It was 4-5 Stars before Amazon. I had hoped it would stay a comfortable comforting place to get health care. They used to give standard 30 minute appointments. I love going to Nurse Practitioners so I am giving them 3 stars because they have or had lots of NP’s. I am not one though I have nurses in my family, and NP’s are trained more to help chronic and non emergency appointments. However NP’s are being pushed out by PA’s who are trained by MD’s (esp for ER & OR), and as abrupt as MD’s while not as people skilled & experienced as NP’s… or even MD’s. PA’s are actually even less compassionate than MD’s in my experience. Every single one I have gone to - so I avoid them like the plague uh like they were … scrooges? Dangerous? Walking automatons? Can you tell I hate PA’s? Something wrong with me having to work around that to get health care ! NP’s are more holistic and patient. 90% of the time I have great appointments with them, get what I need and not feel dehumanized. They have been with people in different ways than PA’s ever could as former RN’s/LVN’s. I hope Amazon doesn’t let NP’s go. After all having NP’s are the reason I joined One Medical. No problems with my insurance so far. Like the virtual access almost any time available. App is pretty good. Since Amazon took over another thing happened: I wasn’t able to leave in time to get there with all the traffic so I asked 30 minutes ahead of time for a virtual appointment which should be a no brainer. The customer service guy stayed on the phone with me for 45 minutes while trying to reach their office where No One (!) was answering the phone. wth this is like so unethical not to have someone at the desk and answering the phones. Wasn’t charged for the appointment (so far!). They lost money by me not being able to do it on their app, though they may have updated this I hope. Sometimes in California the people who call have bad accents. One called a while back to say they would not do a virtual with me that I had scheduled that minute. She told me to come at x time as they re-booked me then. This is without asking first. OK so maybe in this person’s world, it is ok to command a patient to do x. She could have asked: “will that work for you?” or “would you be available then?” Then the guy/hc provider, i was supposed to have an appointment with calls 15 minutes later, and denies he told her to say that! I get on to start the appointment 15 m into a 20 m (or 20 into an 25?) against my better judgement but I did need to ask if I could get this test before the in person appointment. This Dr P I had a virtual appointment which had been derailed wasn’t too people skilled and would barely let me get a word in and wasn’t listening to me. But now that I think about it he probably called after I complained just to say to his manager he tried to meet with me. I don’t think he had any intention of helping me - maybe even getting some free time to read or play a computer game instead. He did say that the medical assistant was in his office and was not in India or elsewhere which was reassuring that my medical info had not been sent to a foreign country and back which might happen with Amazon in charge. Banks are doing it - it is an unfortunate thing. I hung up on him when he abruptly with an impatient unkind tone asked do you wan to tell me what is going on with your health? (I thought: No I can’t believe you are asking with 2 m left to the appointment and with such negativity. Is this how you build rapport? Trust? ). Reading about how they use untrained people or people who are put into their positions with minimal training is becoming more obvious. Does Amazon think they can treat medical offices like package centers? I guess I need to find other health care providers - oh well. American health care system leaves something to be desired even before it was Amazon-ed!

Trash since getting eaten by Amazon. I was with One Medical in 2019 before my supported insurance became unavailable to me. It was great; everything was really easy, I had a dedicated team of people who managed my stuff and getting questions answered was a snap. Since getting absorbed by Amazon and thusly enshitefied, that last feature has totally disappeared, and so far it doesn't feel like they really know what they're doing. My one visit, while attentive in person, still felt a little rushed and the sense that there's patient, available support has totally vanished. More importantly, the billed the wrong insurance company (that I haven't been with in nearly five years) and when I called to correct the issue & ask how to be sure it won't happen again, the guy on the phone basically said there's nothing he can do but correct it now. Fast forward to today when I've gotten a bill due reminder and called back, and I'm again told that there's nothing they can do about the automated notifications. Essentially, while more Panera rather than Taco Bell, this has become fast food medical care. Don't expect a helpful back end, any feeling of personal care or attention, or any other praises that predate their selling out to Amazon.

disappointing

At first you think it's easier. Great, you only wait 5 minutes, you use the app to schedule an appointment. But all of the impersonal corporate things about it really made me think good god why didn't I find a nice family practice? They cancel things, the HR people are really annoying to talk to, and they dupe you by saying you can do free video consultations but it's not the same thing as a virtual visit… I can't remember the two different things names' but one is like zooming with the person you'd see except you're home and you pay a copay for that, and that's not the same as the one that is free! so that is annoying… overall, once the shine wears off the fancy lobby you start to think, man this is kind of a soulless place and if your experience booking something on the app just works, then it can be positive, but if anything deviates (like if they reschedule you randomly or there's a billing issue or whatever), it's like going to the end of the TV set and seeing the cheap cardboard and stuff behind the glittery set dressing… I had some positive doctor experiences and some totally perfunctory not great ones… I scheduled a doctor's appointment at least 3 months out, and then now two weeks beforehand they just emailed to drop me … very annoying
