Have had the Cubbit for a few years and strongly recommend for those that want to control their cloud data

Have had the Cubbit for a few years. Was initially a bit of a challenge (which is probably what other were commenting), they have added functionality including app for iPhone and Apps for computers (macOS and Windows). I don't use Android so can't speak to that. Uploading and sharing files is easy and works just like dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive. Only issue is the uploading and downloading function is slow with all the encrypting and block chaining. But they are rolling out a new update that will speed things up dramatically. Leaving the unit plugged into router and on all the time is a non-issue as it doesn't use much energy and there is nothing to do from a user perspective. And if one has to pay for 1 TB of cloud storage, having this "free" simply to buy and contribute the 1 TB (or more) seems like a no brainer. And if you don't want to continue, you can use the device as local 1 TB drive. Overall, I if you don't want the big data companies controlling data on their servers and billing you for recurring subscriptions and yet still want a "cloud storage" function with ability to share and access via multiple platforms, this works well. PS. Customer support is ok - provided 9 to 5 via email from Italy so not a 24/7 service at the moment. Biggest concern is that some Private Equity firm or Tech firm will buy this and then convert it to a subscription service.... Overall - I like this and am happy to support.

Update fried my computer

Kickstarted this project, paid a high price for a unit and because I believed in the project. Even though the UI worked sometimes to upload files to the cloud it was super slow, I was never able to download anything back from somewhere else nor were my friends when I used a sharing link. I always kept the thing plugged in and updated just in hope that one day it would be useful and the project would take off. But it never did. Just 1-2 days ago I got a survey from Cubbit to know if I would recommend their product, on which I said no and gave the lowest scores. The survey also asked for my Cubbit account. Today my computer got fried after a Cubbit update that had a mandatory CPU restart and won't start anymore. Kind of odd that it's working fine since years and that the moment you take an update from them after having rated them badly in a survey you suddenly get an update which kills your computer. I've disconnected my unit and would consider it malware at this point.

Nice idea but nothing works

Nice idea, unfortunately nothing seem to work as expected. Web app can't upload file bigger than 200 mb, desktop app doesn't upload anything but folders. Their Help center is only capable of telling you to wait for the next upgrade of the software, but every time it's the same story. Don't waste your money, buy a nas for the same price.

Doesn't work as advertised

Cubbit have great promo videos and vast potential (if it works), but be advised... I bought a 4TB Cubbit Cell in August and I've just arranged to send it back under their 30 day trial! This is not a working product. Still in early development, not that they advertise that in a predominant place! I tried backing up 600GB of data from my mac, 4 days later and it had only completed 32gb... at that rate it would take 2 months to complete... if my mac died, it would therefore take me 2 months to be back up and running! I have 2 other computers to backup as well. If like me you're wanting to back up your whole computer, forget it, it can't do that. It uses a single folder location on your computer that you have to place your files into, so pretty much useless as a real backup system! The Cubbit app is well thought out and easy to use, however, on my mac (Mac OS Mojave) it kept closing on its own and without any warning, no error messages, it just closes, which became worse after tech support told me to upgrade the cubbit app to v9.03 - because the app kept closing it means no backup at all was happening. The Cubbit Cell unit itself is a very cheap plastic unit, I was expecting a better build quality for the price paid. I think this tech could be great, if it worked as advertised, but they're nowhere near ready. They should have a clear warning that this is a beta system (at best) and doesn't quite work correctly at this time. Their tech support was fine, most emails were responded to and handled quickly. I don't like writing negative reviews, but having spent almost €500, you'd expect the thing to work! My advice would be to wait 6-12 months before purchasing, unless you only have a few photos you want to backup, in which case it would be cheaper (free) to use Dropbox or Google drive.
